On Tuesday June 14 I received a cease and desist from MLB regarding Batter’s Box. I’ve talked with them for the past week and I’m sad to report that Batter’s Box has now been removed from the app store as of 3:30pm EDT June 20.
I’d like to thank Brian Kim, who provided invaluable assistance with art and image assets for the app, and the nearly 16000 of you who downloaded the app in the 2.5 months it was available.
I am considering opening up the codebase since it may be useful/interesting to various developers, but I’ll do another post if I decide to move forward with that.
Out of curiosity, are you allowed to divulge what you were infringing on?
Batter’s Box used Gameday XML. MLB’s opinion was that Batter’s Box was a “commercial” app because it was in the App Store and Apple derived value from it even though I personally did not monetize it.
What a bunch of crap! Nice job, MLB. Way to promote your sport.
Sorry to hear the news. Another feather in Selig’s brilliant cap…
It’s interesting. My 8-year old son saw the Batter’s Box app on my iPhone and wanted to install it on his iPod so he could keep up with scores. We thought it was strange that we could no longer find it in searches on the App Store. Really appreciate your work on this since ESPN’s site is increasingly painful to load on the iPhone.
I guess the app will continue to work for those who already have a copy installed?
Had to do a restore on my iPad and, when I went looking for your app to reinstall, couldn’t find it in the app store. Then I discovered the sad news. It was a terrific little app. I used it several times a day and will miss it. Thanks for sharing it with us.
What a great shame, it was the start of my day here in the UK to watch the summary of the Yankees game.
MLB should remember that they have a lot of fans outside the US.
Of all the apps I have downloaded, this is by far the best. Tried to recommend to my baseball friends, but alas no go. Not watching games on TV, II am excited to see the highlighted plays, just enough to get a visual flavor fo the game.
Best app on my iPad. Thank you, Paul.
I love your app!
Is there any other way to still get it. . . other than the app store? Possible?
